Ronald Araujo is set to commit to a contract extension which will see him remain in Barcelona beyond this summer.
Per Fabrizio Romano, contrary to speculations linking the 25-year old away from the Catalan club, Araujo has agreed “in principle on a new contract with Barcelona” with contract details to be discussed in the coming days.
The defender, who arrived at the Spanish club in 2020, had initially been linked with a move to Juventus and Manchester United this month.
Reports revealed that Juventus saw the Uruguayan as ‘a top priority’ and a perfect replacement for team captain Danilo. This is as the Brazilian is likely to leave the club in the ongoing transfer window following multiple reports of interest from Napoli and Saudi Arabia.
Araujo has been a pivotal figure in Barcelona’s defensive line since joining the club. The defender recently returned to action after being sidelined with a hamstring injury which kept him out for the first half of the season. His comeback was marked by a scintillating 90-minutes performance in a 4-0 victory over Barbastro in the Copa del Rey earlier this month.
With the defender set to remain at the club, Barcelona will be looking to extend their winning run after the Super Cup victory over Real Madrid, when they take on Real Betis in the Copa del Rey last-16 encounter tonight.
