Former Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has taken over the coaching job at Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas.
The Norwegian has been out of football management since leaving his position as Manchester United manager in November 2021.
The 51-year old led Manchester United to third and second-place finishes in his two full seasons at the helm, and led the club to the Europa League final in 2021 — where they were beaten by Spanish outfit, Villarreal in a penalty shootout.
Besiktas have been without a permanent coach since parting ways with manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November. Interim boss Serdar Topraktepe had been in charge at the Turkish team, but the club’s hierarchy were keen on bringing in a permanent solution and Solskjaer emerged as the favoured candidate.
Prior to his role at Old Trafford, Solskjaer had two stints in charge at Molde — whom he led to the Norwegian league title in 2011 and 2012 — and an eight-month stint in charge of Cardiff City in 2014.
As per The Athletic in September 2023, Solskjaer insisted he wanted to return to management and had received offers, including two clubs from Saudi Arabia.
Besiktas are currently sixth in the Turkish Super Lig and will be returning to action on January 18 with they take on Samsunspor at home, before hosting Athletic Club in the Europa League four days later.
