Leandro Trossard reveals how Arsenal can edge Liverpool in Premier League title race

Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard admitted that the Gunners cannot afford any more slip-ups in the race for the Premier League, insisting that they must remain “perfect” if they are to overtake Liverpool at the summit.

The Gunners enter into matchday 22 in second place on the league table, four points behind leaders Liverpool with a match against eighth placed Aston Villa on the horizon. However, Liverpool have a game in hand, a rescheduled Merseyside derby against Everton next month, keeping the title race firmly in their control.

Trossard, who has seen his level of involvement increase due Arsenal’s injury problems, emphasized that north Londoners must avoid any slip-ups, similar to their struggles against Manchester City in the past two seasons, if they hope to claim Premier League glory.

“You need to be perfect every season,” Trossard told Sky Sports.

“Over the last four or five seasons it’s been such a tight race. Everyone is competing, it’s not just the teams that are at the top of the table, everyone is getting better each season, so it’s getting more competitive.

“You have to be at your [A] game every single matchday. It’s hard, but we just need to keep believing and be ourselves, then we can achieve something.”

Injuries have plagued Arsenal this season, with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus both sidelined. Trossard may have to take on a more central role, while Raheem Sterling files out on the right wing and the Belgian has said he is ready to adapt to the team’s needs amid their injury challenges.

“The injuries are a big blow for us,” Trossard added. “We know what Bukayo [Saka] has shown for the club and Gabriel Jesus was on a good run, those injuries are bad luck.

“We hope we can be ready in the meantime. It’s up to us to be ready.

“We’ve had to twist some things because of the injuries, so everyone gets their chance.

“Of course, I’m always happy [to fill in up front]. I’m always ready to play in whatever position on the pitch.”
