Barcelona are set to be without key midfield star Dani Olmo when they return to UEFA Champions League action against Primeira Liga side SL Benfica on Tuesday.
The Blaugrana confirmed earlier today that Olmo has suffered an injury to his right soleus muscle, effectively consigning the Spain international to a spell on the sidelines.
A statement released by the club on Sunday read; “Dani Olmo has a right soleus (lower calf muscle) strain. He is out for the next match and his return will be determined by his recovery.”
According to a report by AS, Olmo is likely to be sidelined for ten days as a result of his recent muscle injury. If the report is anything to go by, the 26-year-old will also miss Barca’s La Liga clash against Valencia next weekend.
Given Olmo’s history of muscle injuries, The Blaugrana plan to exercise caution and avoid any risk of aggravating his condition. The current plan is for the midfielder to return for their final UCL group stage match against Atalanta on January 29.
Barcelona will not be too affected by Olmo’s injury setback as they have several options who can fill in that number 10 role to ensure that his absence is not greatly felt.
Hansi Flick is blessed with a luxury of highly talented players in the squad, with the German able to rely on the likes of Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Pablo Torre and Frenkie de Jong.
Barcelona are currently third in La Liga after dropping points in their last three league games. They are also doing well in the Champions League, with the Blaugrana sitting second on the table heading into the final two matches.
