Ange Postecoglou sends message to Tottenham hierarchy amid persistent poor run of results

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou called on the club to ‘get help for his players’ after watching his side slump to another Premier League defeat in a five-goal thriller at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Spurs’ squad has been ravaged by injuries this campaign, with Postecoglou often missing a number of his key players at different times. The Australian has been forced to rely on some of his younger players but they have struggled to grind results.

Postecoglou’s preferred center-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have featured in just 44% of Tottenham’s potential Premier League minutes this season, playing a combined 1,752 out of 3,960 minutes.

Meanwhile, first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has been sidelined for 10 league games due to a foot fracture sustained in November’s 4-0 win over Manchester City.

The likes of Destiny Udogie, Yves Bissouma, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, Wilson Odobert, and Dominic Solanke were all unavailable for Spurs’ trip to Merseyside due to injuries. All six players would likely have featured in the matchday squad if fit.

“This is not about me, but what is about me right now is I have the responsibility of the group of players I do have, to try and get us through this, and that’s what I’ve got to focus on,” Postecoglou told reporters in the aftermath of the defeat.

“For me to focus on anything else is abstaining myself from the responsibility I have. I’m just determined to get us out of this. The club’s doing its best to…more about helping the players than helping me because they’re the ones we’re asking some massive jobs of 18-year-olds.

“We had a 17-year-old out there trying to win games of football for us. And others who are just playing week on week, so, you know it’s more about getting the players help rather than me help.”
