Manchester United have reportedly initiated discussions with Lecce over a potential deal to sign versatile left-back Patrick Dorgu.
The Red Devils have struggled to adapt to Amorim’s commitment to a wing-back system, with the Portuguese manager overseeing his fourth Old Trafford defeat since taking charge of the club in November.
In a bid to upgrade United’s defense, Amorim had hoped to reunite with Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, who he coached at Sporting CP. However, Mendes appears set to extend his contract in Paris, ruling out a move to England.
According to The Athletic, Manchester United have now turned their attention to Lecce’s Dorgu, with talks underway regarding a potential transfer.
The Danish international signed a new four-year contract with Lecce in October. However, his standout performances in Serie A have caught the attention of United scouts.
The 20-year-old has started 19 of Lecce’s 21 league matches this season, excelling at left-back, right-back, and even as a right winger. His attacking attributes are likely what piqued Amorim’s interest, given the manager’s willingness to use forward-thinking wing-backs.
United’s urgent need for reinforcements on the left flank has been amplified by Diogo Dalot’s inconsistent performances in an unfamiliar position.
Naturally a right-back, Dalot has often been deployed on the left due to Luke Shaw’s ongoing injury troubles. While Noussair Mazraoui has occasionally stepped in, he is also more effective on the right, allowing Amad to push higher up the pitch.
Certainly, Dorgu’s addition, if United can make it happen, would be a shrewd piece of business for the struggling English giants. Asides from immediately addressing an immediate concern, his versatility could also prove pivotal in this second half of the campaign.
