Report: Newcastle star closing in on MLS return

Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron is reportedly closing in on a return to the Major League Soccer to join former side Atlanta United.

The 30-year old join the Magpies six years ago from the MLS side for a then club-record fee of £21 million, with the club’s current record arrival the signing of Sweden international Alexander Isak for £63 million from Real Sociedad.

Almiron joined Atlanta United for a first spell in 2016 from Argentine side Lanus, and secured a big money move abroad just three years later. The Paraguay international played 70 games in all competitions for the Five Stripes scoring 22 goals and providing 21 assists during his first stint.

He initially struggled for form in England before recapturing top form in the 2022-23 season, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists in all competitions to propel the Magpies to a fourth-placed finish which secured a spot in the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League campaign.

The former MLS newcomer of the season winner has struggled to reclaim a spot in the lineup, recently losing out on the right-wing spot to England international Jacob Murphy and has only featured just nine times in the league this season, starting just once.

Subject to a medical, with both the transfer fee and personal terms already agreed between both parties, Almiron could make a return to the United States in the coming days.
