Manchester United star closing in on return to action following injury layoff

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has rejoined full training with the squad as he edges closer to regaining full fitness and returning to competitive action following his latest injury setback.

Shaw has seen limited game time over the past year, initially suffering a hamstring injury during United’s Premier League clash with Luton Town last February. Although he recovered in time to feature for England in the latter stages of Euro 2024, a calf injury soon sidelined him again.

The England international managed three substitute appearances in the opening week of Ruben Amorim’s tenure before another unfortunate fitness setback in early December that saw him sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Now, Shaw is nearing another return, having taken part in group training on Wednesday morning ahead of this week’s Europa League matchday eight fixture against FCSB.

The 29-year-old’s return to action may still take some time as he was not included in the squad that traveled to Romania. Head coach Amorim has previously indicated that the defender would need at least two weeks of training before being considered for selection.

In Shaw’s absence, right-back Diogo Dalot has primarily filled in on the left, while Tyrell Malacia, recently back from a long-term injury, has also been an option. However, Malacia could depart before the winter transfer window closes, having reportedly been offered to Real Betis on loan.

Meanwhile, United are close to securing a new left-back, with a deal nearly finalized for 20-year-old Denmark international Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. The club has agreed on personal terms with the player and a transfer fee of £25.1m, potentially rising to £29.3m. The move now depends on a medical and the completion of paperwork before Monday’s transfer deadline.
