Arsenal legend Robert Pires has pleaded with head coach Mikel Arteta to secure the signature of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
The Gunners have finished runners-up to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the past two seasons, and currently sit second on the Premier League standings, behind Liverpool who are top of the table.
German forward Kai Havertz remains the club’s only available centre-forward choice, having being linked to several attacking options. Pires, who was a pivotal part of the Invincibles squad, believes the on-loan Galatasaray forward is the missing piece of the puzzle in the Gunners bid to win the Premier League title.
“Victor Osimhen, He has a good profile to play for Arsenal and the players such as Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, Havertz and Bukayo Saka.
But I’m not the owner or manager – I’m just an Arsenal fan who will always support them. If we can bring in one player though, it’d have to be Osimhen”, Pires stated.
The Nigerian forward has been in scintillating form for the Turkish giants this season, with 16 goals and 5 assists in 20 appearances, having left Napoli on-loan in the summer, and Pires believes he could be the key to ending the Gunners major title drought.
“Of course, I respect a lot of the decisions of Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, but in my time, I used to play with Henry, Bergkamp, and Kanu, so we had three real strikers, and it was easy sometimes to score goals. But maybe this is the new football, so we have to adapt to the philosophy”, the French forward added, comparing the Gunners attacking options to past times.
