Heartland FC technical director Emmanuel Amuneke was pleased with his youthful side’s performance after securing a 1-1 draw with former NPFL champions Enyimba.
The Naze Millionaires opened the scoring in the Oriental Derby against their fierce rivals, through a penalty kick scored by Daniel Ekpo as they went into the break ahead. The Peoples Elephant got their equalizer through striker Joseph Atule, as the game ended in a draw after missed chances from both sides.
“I’m happy for the boys. They fought hard, showed character, and that’s what sets a player apart—character and the ability to interpret the game both in and out of possession”, Amuneke said.
“I have to be grateful to the boys and say a very big thank you to them.”
Amuneke who won the 1994 AFCON as a player for the Super Eagles, was impressed with the overall team display, stating they could have scored more goals in the game.
“It was a very interesting and exciting match from both teams. Enyimba are a big team, and we must acknowledge their achievements in the game over the years.
But we came here knowing that if we could tactically manage certain aspects, especially when out of possession, it would be easier for us to win”, the former Tanzania coach stated.
“Overall, we could have won the game if we had taken our chances and scored four or five goals. That wouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone.”
Heartland are currently 13th on the log and will play host to former champions Rivers United this weekend, in Matchday 22 of the Nigerian Professional Football League.
