Ex-Arsenal and Man United star Van Persie named Feyenoord manager

Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie has been appointed as the new head coach of Eredivisie side Feyenoord.

The 41-year old left his role as head coach of Heerenveen, also in the Dutch Eredivisie, to join the former league champions as a replacement for Brian Priske, who was sacked last week after a poor run of form.

Danish coach Priske was appointed as a replacement in the summer after Arne Slot left the club to join English Premier league side Liverpool, but was dismissed after a run of just a single win in their last six league matches.

Van Persie who also played for Feyenoord during his playing days, amassing 46 goals in 122 appearances, was recently at the club up until 2024, after previously working as an assistant under Dick Advocaat in 2020 before taking charge of the club’s youth team.

“Everyone knows how special my bond with Feyenoord is. I am enormously looking forward, together with a strong staff, to working with the player group”, he said.

The former Netherlands forward has agreed a deal until 2027 and will be joined by Rene Hake who was had previously worked with Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United.

Feyenoord currently occupy the third position in the Eredivisie standings, 11 points behind league leaders Ajax Amsterdam, while they also face Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 next month.
