Newcastle United sweating on star’s fitness ahead of huge Brighton task

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has expressed concerns over the availability of Sweden international Alexander Isak ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup fifth round clash against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 25-year old missed the 2-0 loss at Anfield to league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday with a groin injury, a match in which the Magpies failed to muster an attempt on target.

Speaking ahead of the crucial Emirates FA Cup clash against the Seagulls, Howe rejected the idea of his side being a one-man team, despite the fact that they are yet to win a game without the Swedish striker this season.

“We will see today. I haven’t seen him since the game. We will see how he is today. We don’t think it’s a long-term problem. There was no risk taken on Wednesday and there can’t be with the stage of the season we’re in”, Howe said.

“There is always a risk with any player but we wouldn’t take any risks on his long-term fitness. We will see how he is today and if he is fit, he will play.”

Newcastle United host Brighton at the St James Park on Sunday, in search of a first win over their opponents since May 2023, and will hope Isak, who has scored 21 times in all competitions this season is available to take part.

“I think with Alex, it is pretty clear for me, if he is fit in any game leading up to the EFL Cup final then he will play and we have to have that mindset with all of our players. You can’t save players as they will lose rhythm.

The best thing for a player to stay in good form and to stay fit is to play them and that’s what we will try to do with all of our players”, he added.
