Nasarawa United head coach Salisu Yusuf sees his side’s recent win over Nigeria Professional Football League table toppers Remo Stars as a huge boost in their bid to beat the drop this season.
The Lafia-based club claimed a shock 1-0 victory over their South Western opponents despite heading into the game at the Lafia Township Stadium as the underdogs.
A solitary striker from Ana’s Yusuf earned the NPFL strugglers their eight win of the season, putting them three points away from a spot outside of the relegation zone.
Speaking after the game, head coach Salisu Yusuf, who only recently took charge of Nasarawa United, was impressed with his side’s performance despite having had a couple of days to prepare for the clash.
“It’s a great result for us today, despite the tight schedules before this game,” Yusuf said as quoted by The Guardian.
“We only had two days to train before this game because we needed to manage the fatigue. Within those few days, I tried to imprint my game plan into players.
“We got our goal through a high press. I think the team has great potential to grow, and we will work on our team cohesion so that the players will understand themselves better.
“We respect Remo Stars as the league leaders, but if you observed very well today, they couldn’t create any goal-scoring opportunity throughout the game.
“I am so proud of the performance of the boys today against the league leaders. The mandate to me is to rescue the team from being relegated, and I believe that is achievable.”
Next up for Yusuf’s charges in the NPFL is a challenging trip to fifth placed Abia Warriors on Sunday, March 2.
