Manchester United seek Students’ Help in Injury Prediction

Manchester United have reportedly reached out to the University of Manchester for assistance with predicting injuries to new signings.

The Red Devils have been hit with a number of injury blows this season, with Lisandro Martinez ruled out until late 2025 with a serious knee injury, while Luke Shaw and Mason Mount have also struggled for consistent playing time due to their respective fitness issues. Amad Diallo is also expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering an ankle injury during training, while Kobbie Mainoo and Toby Collyer are both currently sidelined.

Injuries were also a major problem last season under former head coach Erik ten Hag, as the team recorded a total of 66 separate cases of injuries, leading to United finishing in eighth place.

Manchester United boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently claimed that data analysis at the club “doesn’t really exist,” adding that the club is still “in the last century on data analysis.”

According to Manchester Evening News, Man United is looking to create an injury prediction algorithm to assess the fitness risks of potential new signings. The report also states that the club has “approached the University of Manchester to see if any students or staff have the skill set to develop an algorithm as part of their data overhaul.”

Should Manchester United successfully develop this injury prediction model, it will be a significant boost for a club that has suffered a terrible run of form due to injuries.
