PSG manager Luis Enrique is optimistic about his side’s chances of securing qualification for the quarterfinals of the Champions League, despite a 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the first leg on Wednesday.
The French champions ten-game winning streak was ended, as they lost yesterday’s first leg encounter at the Parc des Princes to the English side despite dominating the encounter from start to finish.
Substitute Harvey Elliott scored a late winner moments after coming on, to give the Reds the advantage going into the second leg with their only effort on goal.
Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker was named the player of the match after his breathtaking performance included nine saves on the night to deny the French side.
“I don’t think it’s too difficult to analyse tonight’s game. We were far superior to Liverpool.
We created more chances and produced a complete performance against one of Europe’s top sides. Football can be unfair at times”, a disappointed Enrique said after the match.
“Without a doubt [they can go through]. We’ve only played the first leg. We’re a side with nothing to lose. If we can replicate tonight’s performance, we can qualify.”
The loss also ended PSG 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions and gives them a daunting challenge ahead of the second leg, which will take place at Anfield next Tuesday.
“We deserved more. Their best player was their goalkeeper – he was magnificent today. Today wasn’t a game based on the stats or the details.
We were far superior. We didn’t allow Liverpool to play. They were better than us for the first five minutes but, apart from that, it was us on top”, he added.
