“A good result”- Jose Mourinho makes bold statement despite Europa League humbling

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho is confident his side can secure qualification for the next round of the UEFA Europa League despite falling to a 3-1 first leg defeat to Rangers on Thursday.

The Turkish giants will head into the second leg in Scotland next week, needing to overcome a two-goal deficit after their disappointing loss in yesterday’s match, which also ended their 18-game unbeaten streak.

Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers gave the visitors an early advantage with a seventh minute opener, before Alexander Djiku equalized for Jose Mourinho’s side.

“We were very bad everywhere. I think it’s not fair to say we were very bad in defence, because we were very bad everywhere”, the former Chelsea boss said.

“Maybe you laugh, but for me it was a good result, because the way we performed the result could be bigger than this. The chances we had to score we didn’t. The dynamic in midfield was not good. Defensively, we made incredible mistakes. We never controlled that.

Czech Republic international Vaclav Cerny added a brace to seal a famous win for Barry Ferguson’s side, although Mourinho believes his side can overcome all odds to qualify.

“But if somebody later wants to ask me do I think it’s over, no, I don’t think it’s over. There is 90 or 120 minutes to play. It’s the only positive thing. And from this game, I don’t take any positives. Everything went wrong”, Mourinho added.

“The only thing I tell them is, don’t celebrate too much. Because there is a second match. It’s my only advice.”
