Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has called on players and fans to approach the Southampton match like a final, emphasizing the need to stay focused despite the upcoming clashes against Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
Slot’s Reds emerged 1-0 victors away at PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday despite being second-best for the vast majority of that game. That win at the Parc des Princes put them in control ahead of the second leg at Anfield.
Following their crucial victory in Paris, Liverpool’s next run of games include a Premier League fixture against bottom-feeders Southampton, a return fixture against PSG and then a Carabao final clash against Newcastle.
On paper, the game against Southampton seems to be Liverpool’s easiest in that three-game run. However, Slot has passionately urged fans to rally behind the team, especially for that match.
“For me the one against Southampton is by far the most important,” Slot began.
“I have to convince my players we play three finals and I am hoping that I influence our fans so they understand how important they are going to be.
“I hope they will not come into the stadium five minutes before kick-off, I’m hoping the stadium is already filled half-an-hour before so these players get the reward for what they did in Paris.
“I know the final is there and everyone is already talking to me about how the atmosphere will be on a Champions League night but truly I hope our fans will be at their loudest tomorrow.”
Slot’s position on the Southampton game is quite understandable. Any slip ups could potentially affect the morale of his team and disrupt their momentum ahead of two season defining games in the UCL and EFL Cup.
