Mason Greenwood Dumps England Dreams, Seeks to Play For Jamaica Instead

Mason Greenwood has formally applied to switch his international allegiance following his inability to play for the Three Lions in 2022.

As per the Mirror, Greenwood has made a formal application to be registered as a player for Jamaica. The striker had won just one cap for England leading to his arrest on suspicion of rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and actual bodily harm in January of 2022. The charges were dropped in February 2023.

Greenwood has scored a total 15 Ligue 1 goals in 24 games for Marseille this season. Even if England head coach, Thomas Tuchel were to call him up for England’s next encounter against Albania and Latvia in the world cup qualifiers, he would be unable to do so, as he has formally requested to switch allegiance.

Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said: “So my understanding, and I’d have to double check my understanding, is he’s asked to switch. That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to because you can only switch once.

“I don’t think there was ever a request or anything like that. It just wasn’t one we got to, so it’s a personal decision by him.”

Up next, Marseille will play Lens in Ligue 1 this weekend. While England will return to the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia March kicking off the Tuchel era
