United States’ Sophia Wilson Announces Pregnancy

USWNT and Portland Thorns forward Sophia Wilson is expecting her first child.

Wilson, 24, announced the news in a joint post on Instagram with her husband Michael Wilson. The pair posted a photo of themselves with an ultrasound scan accompanied by the caption “life just keeps getting sweeter”.

Portland posted a congratulatory message to Wilson on social media and said the club was “proud to support her through this incredible new chapter”.

The forward joined Portland in 2020 following her collegiate career with Stanford Cardinal. She was named the NWSL’s MVP in 2022 after contributing 15 goals and three assists in 20 league appearances as the Thorns won the NWSL Championship.

The 24-year old who has scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 20 appearances for Portland this season signed a new contract in March 2024 which runs through the 2025 season, with the option to extend through to 2026.

The NWSL agreed a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in September which guaranteed players are entitled to six months of fully paid maternity leave and have access to medical coverage, team facilities and resources during their maternity leave. Players also cannot lose contracts due to pregnancy and if a player’s contract expires during their pregnancy, their team must invite them to the next pre-season camp to earn their spot back.

The 2025 NWSL season begins in March, with the Thorns facing Kansas City Current on March 15.
