Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has stated that his side are focused on their next match against Bauer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League, despite their shock home loss to Bochum on Saturday.
With one eye on the second leg of their crucial UCL quarterfinals against the reigning Bundesliga champions in midweek, Kompany fielded a much-changed squad against their relegation-threatened opponents.
Raphael Guerreiro’s brace was not enough as goals from Jakob Medic, Ibrahima Sissoko and Matus Bero secured a memorable victory for Bochum.
“I know the topics of discussion. I know the criticism. It’s important to focus on the reaction [in the next match]”, Kompany said after the defeat.
“We’ll naturally talk about this incident in the locker room. What’s important to me is that we don’t use that as an excuse. Even with ten-men, we were up 2-1. We still had the responsibility to win this game, or at least not lose it [via a draw].”
Bayern Munich however remain eight points clear at the top of the standings after Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side failed to capitalize, as they also suffered a shock home loss to Werder Bremen.
“I also don’t wish to minimise what Bochum did, praise for how they maintained a feel that they could win this game. I could go on for 30 minutes at this presser, but you already know what happened. We lost”, the former Burnley coach added.
“Pretty soon you’re going to bring up the matter that Leverkusen lost too, but I don’t care. And I don’t have an opinion [on Joao Palhinha’s red]. That’s an excuse and that serves no purpose today.“
