Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has announced his final 23-man squad list in anticipation of Nigeria’s must-win 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe on March 19 and 22 respectively.
The Super Eagles boss has made some big calls with his final selection, cutting out some established national team stars in favour of the inclusion of some relatively new and fresh faces I’m the squad.
One of such big calls sees Papa Daniel Mustapha of Niger Tornadoes make Chelle’s final squad. The midfielder, who plays in the Nigerian Professional Football League, impressed the Super Eagles boss enough to earn a spot ahead of some more established names like Frank Onyeka and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
Another big call by Chelle sees Remo Stars goalkeeper Kayode Bankole beat Maduka Okoye to a place on the final list. Enosis Neon Paralimni shot-stopper Amas Obasogie also benefited from Chelle’s decision to shake up the goalkeeping department, earning a call-up despite his relative inexperience in international football.
In terms of players who will be missing out, Ahmed Musa, Nigeria’s most capped player, failed to make the cut. While his experience and leadership have been invaluable over the years, the gaffer has opted to go with youth and power upfront.
Kelechi Iheanacho’s omission is perhaps the most notable on Eric Chelle’s final list. While Chelle’s decision to leave out Iheanacho can be understood from the aspect of the player’s poor form this season, the 28-year-old’s experience could’ve been pivotal for the Super Eagles.
As the dates for the games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe draw close, all eyes will be on the Super Eagles boss, keenly observing how his big calls will impact Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
