Liverpool suffer significant injury blow ahead of Carabao cup final

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that England international Trent Alexander-Arnold is a major doubt for Liverpool’s match against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, after suffering an injury in the UCL Round of 16 loss to Paris Saint Germain on Tuesday.

The 26-year old was replaced in the 73rd minute by young defender Jarell Quansah after reportedly hurting his ankle after an awkward landing, as the Reds were dumped out of Europe by the French champions on penalties.

“[Trent] had to come off. That’s never a good sign,” Slot said. “And from what I heard from people that saw the images or how he got injured, it did not look very good. So I would be surprised if he is available for Sunday.”

Alexander-Arnold’s injury is also a huge blow to England manager Thomas Tuchel who prepares to take charge of the Three Lions for the first time, when he leads the team to face Albania and Latvia in World Cup qualifying matches later this month.

Slot also played down any sign of injury to French center-back Ibrahima Konate who limped off in extra time, regarding it as a sign of fatigue instead.

The Reds face Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday as they look to claim a second successive Carabao Cup title.
