Luis Enrique delighted by Paris Saint-Germain’s ‘personality’ and ‘character’ following Anfield UCL last-16 triumph

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has hailed his team for their personality and character after earning a deserved place in the Champions League quarter-finals following a penalty shootout victory at Anfield in the round of 16 on Tuesday.

Enrique’s side, currently unbeaten at the top of Ligue 1 this season and on course to win their 10th Ligue 1 title in 12 seasons, are yet to win the Champions League. Liverpool, who topped the league phase and won the first leg 1-0, were considered favorites to reach the last eight.

However, the French side overturned the tie in the away leg, having been set back by Harvey Elliott’s goal at the Parc des Princes last week. They secured a 1-0 win after extra time before triumphing 4-1 on penalties.

“Both of the teams deserved to go to the next phase, they play better than us here, but I think my team at Anfield, in a special stadium, showed great personality and character,” said Luis Enrique.

“We tried to play our best, but it was difficult as they’re so intense. Both teams deserved to qualify. The character and personality, even when we shoot at the penalty shootout they showed great character. I think it shows clearly the team we are.”

“When the draw told us about the match against Liverpool and PSG, both managers thought the same, one of the best matches you can watch in Europe,” Luis Enrique said.

“I think both teams were great. We are happy and confident to go to the next phase.”

With a Champions League quarter final berth secured, next up for Enrique’s PSG is a crunch top of the Ligue 1 table clash against Olympique Marseille at the Parc des Princes on March 16.
