Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has been left out of Arne Slot’s plans for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United due to injury.
Liverpool head coach, Arne Slot reveals that Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the Carabao Cup final but expects him to return before the end of the season. The right-back limped off in Liverpool’s Champions League last-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in midweek and Reds manager Slot has now said he will not be available for Sunday’s clash against Newcastle United in the cup final.
However, the Dutchman believes the 26-year-old has not played his last game for the club, with the defender out of contract this summer. He told reporters on Friday: “Trent is indeed not available. He will not be there at the final. But he’s still to be assessed for how long it’s going to take. We do expect him back before the end of the season.”
The Reds are also expected to be without Conor Bradley (muscle injury), and Joe Gomez (hamstring) have all been sidelined since February. Ibrahima Konate was also withdrawn in the latter stages of extra-time against PSG but is expected to be available against Newcastle.
The Reds have won 18 domestic trophies including 10 League Cups and eight FA Cup titles and could equal Manchester United’s haul of 19 – 6 League Cups and 13 FA Cups – should they defeat Newcastle United on Sunday.
Alexander-Arnold has been a key player for Liverpool since making his senior debut in 2016 but there is a growing possibility he may leave his boyhood club for good.
Mohammad Salah and Virgil Van Gilk are also out of contract with the club with Van Dijk saying this week he had “no idea” whether he will stay at Anfield beyond the current season. Absence of ongoing talks of a possible contract extension before the heading to the season has cast further doubt over the players’ futures at the club.
Real Madrid have been linked with the Englishman and if he does depart, he will want to go out on a high with a Premier League title and a Carabao Cup win – even if he doesn’t play in the latter.
Liverpool will seek to retain their Carabao Cup title and win the first trophy under Arne Slot when they take on Newcastle on Sunday afternoon at Wembley, following a shocking Champions League exit at the hands of PSG.
