Bompastor wins first trophy as Chelsea beat Man City in League Cup final

Sonia Bompastor has won her first trophy as Chelsea manager, as The Blues secured a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Women’s League Cup.

Chelsea ended an incredible run of three successive Women’s League Cup final losses by defeating Manchester City in Saturday’s final to claim the first trophy of the Sonia Bompastor era.

Mayra Ramirez’s first half strike and an unfortunate own goal just 13 minutes from finish time by City’s Yui Hasegawa gave the Blues the victory and what they will hope is the first of four trophies in the final two months of the season.

“We enjoy today but we need to switch on tomorrow to be in preparation for Wednesday’s game,” said Bompastor.

“I will celebrate the most at the end of the season when hopefully we have more trophies. We have 1 trophy but only 1 out of 4. Hopefully we can win more.”

The 44-year old arrived at the London club in the summer following Emma Hayes departure to manage the USWNT in May 2024.

Chelsea have now won 21 of their last 25 matches in all competitions, including three draws and a defeat, with the team putting a halt to a consecutive run of defeat in finals to secure the first of what they hope will be a historic quadruple season.

It was not the result Nick Cushing would have wanted having stepped back into the dugout earlier in the week following Gareth Taylor’s unceremonious departure. The defeat also adds an unwanted piece of history, as City have now lost 12 of their last 18 games against Chelsea in all competitions.

Chelsea and Manchester City will return to action on Wednesday, when they face off in the first-leg of the Women’s Championship League, and in the second leg on March 27th, before which they face-off on March 23rd in the WSL where Chelsea will be looking to strengthen their football at the top of the table.
