Khadija Shaw is likely to miss Manchester City’s second-of-four encounters against Chelsea.
The 28-year old left Saturday’s Women’s League Cup final due to a hamstring issue, just four days before Manchester City’s Champions League clash.
Shaw was subbed off with 10 minutes to play in Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea, despite City being 2-1 down and in need of a goal to get back into the match.
“She did take a clattering various times but I don’t think that was the injury,” City interim boss Nick Cushing said after the game.
“She’s feeling her hamstring, so we’ll look at her. We’ll obviously leave her with the medical team. She’s a really important player for us, so hopefully she’ll be ready for Wednesday. But if not, we will find a solution.”
City who are currently 4th on the league table – four points behind Manchester United who occupy the third and final slot of European qualification – are in the middle of a gruelling schedule with Saturday being the first of four meetings with Chelsea in just 12 days. On Wednesday, they face the Blues in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, before hosting them in the Women’s Super League on Sunday. Four days after that, City will travel to London for the second leg of that European tie.
Manchester City will certainly hope to have Shaw involved in all three of those games, with last season’s WSL Golden Boot winner a near-irreplaceable figure. The striker sustained an injury towards the end of the 2023/24 season which coincided with City losing a foothold on the WSL title race.
City will hope for good news from the medical team about Shaw over the next few days, as they prepare for that Champions League first leg. The squad is already missing some key members of the squad in Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood, and will need to be at their best to avenge Saturday’s 2-1 loss at the League Cup final on Wednesday.
