Niger Tornadoes midfielder Papa Mustapha Daniel experienced shock and then excitement after learning of his inclusion in Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad to face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Mustapha has put up some really impressive displays for Niger Tornadoes in the Nigeria Professional Football League this season as well as Nigeria’s home based Eagles to earn the recognition of those in charge of the national team.
The 23-year-old is one of only two NPFL stars to make Chelle’s final 23-man squad and he has now revealed while speaking to NFF TV, that his inclusion came as a surprise but it made him “very happy.”
“I never expected it (the call-up), I was just doing my thing. When I saw the provisional list, I was shocked. And when I saw the 23-man list I was very happy.
“Thanks to God, because it’s not easy for me to be here. Seeing the big boys in camp being my first time in camp is like a motivation for me to do more and show them who I am.”
Mustapha also used the opportunity to make a bold promise to Nigerians and the world at large. In anticipation of his first Super Eagles cap, the Niger Tornadoes star expressed confidence in his ability to make an impact for Nigeria.
“Of course, I’ll be very very happy if I have the chance, I will show Nigeria and the world what I can do.”
While Mustapha can certainly play a part for Nigeria against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, the decision on whether or not to deploy his talents over these two games rest in the hands of Chelle who is obviously a huge admirer of the midfielder.
