Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson is set to make his return on the touchline for Giuseppe Rossi’s farewell game in Florence.
Ferguson retired from football management in 2013, bringing an end to his 39-year coaching career with a total of 50 trophies. The 83-year old Scottish manager is now set to return to the touchline this weekend in Florence for Rossi’s farewell match.
According to Rossi, Ferguson will be taking the role of coach once again. The role will be for one of the teams in the former Manchester United striker’s testimonial farewell at Stadio Artemio Franchi, the home of former club Fiorentina.
Rossi spent three years at Old Trafford early in his career, between 2004 to 2007 before moving to Villarreal, while he retired in 2023 after playing for a number of Serie A clubs including Genoa and SPAL.
“Ferguson will be there as a coach. He was my first coach, I signed when I was 17” Rossi said while speaking to the media.
“I only did three years with him and played little, but he immediately said yes and this shows what kind of person he is. I did little at United but he treats me like Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 1000 goals.”
Rossi’s farewell will be played on March 22. Ferguson is one of the several legendary names present, with Luca Toni, Antonio Cassano, Sebastien Frey and Gabriel Batistuta also in line to play the same role.
