The Super Eagles secured their first win of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers under Eric Chelle after sealing a routine 2-0 victory over Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali thanks to Victor Osimhen’s brace.
Nigeria went into Friday’s game in desperate need of a victory after failing to secure maximum points in any of their first four qualifying matches with a record of three draws and one defeat.
Osimhen helped the Super Eagles to a strong start by scoring in the 11th minute, capitalizing on Rwanda’s poor defending to volley in Ademola Lookman’s beautifully floated cross.
He then doubled Nigeria’s lead just before halftime with a well-executed lob after winning the ball on the halfway line as a result of his relentless pressing.
The second half was a less eventful affair, with the Super Eagles content to protect their two goal lead and see out the game. This victory sees Nigeria earn their first three points of the qualifying campaign and moves their points tally from three to six.
In other group C games, South Africa secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Lesotho earlier today while Benin Republic and Zimbabwe played out a thrilling 2-2 on Thursday night.
Nigeria have now moved up the standings, leapfrogging Lesotho to climb from 5th to 4th place. They however remain four points off first placed South Africa although they have cut the gap between themselves and Rwanda to one point while they trail Benin by two points.
Next up, the Super Eagles will look to secure a second consecutive victory when they take on Zimbabwe on Tuesday, March 25. Victory in that game would certainly propel them further up in the group standings.
