Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed that the team is ready to face Zimbabwe, ahead of their encounter at the Godswill Akpabio stadium on Tuesday.
Nigeria got their qualification campaign back on track with a comfortable 2-0 win over Rwanda on Friday, and will hope to secure back to back wins when they face The Warriors.
Victor Osimhen scored twice in the first half to begin the Eric Chelle reign with a victory, in what was an impressive overall performance from the team.
Ekong who played the whole 90 minutes on Friday, is confident the team remains motivated to get a win as they hope to return to the world stage after missing the 2022 edition.
“We read somewhere that the Zimbabweans are being motivated to come to Uyo and get a result. They should forget it,” Ekong said.
The Super Eagles are fourth in Group C, four points behind table-topping South Africa and must defeat their opponents on Tuesday to keep their hopes of qualifying alive, with only the first-placed side assured of an automatic spot.
The reverse fixture between both teams ended in a 1-1 draw on Matchday two as Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Iheanacho equalized, after Walter Musona had given the Warriors a first half lead.
“We are hugely motivated by the ambition to play at the FIFA World Cup. Apart from myself, Alex (Iwobi), and perhaps a couple of others, who were part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, this generation is hungry to play at the highest level.
We want to make Nigeria proud and at the same time, do ourselves proud”, he added.
Nigeria have never lost to Zimbabwe on home soil and will hope to continue the trend on Tuesday, with their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
