Former U.S. midfielder, Clint Dempsey has expressed his disappointment on the USNMT’s performance after a pair of Nations League losses.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side had suffered back-to-back losses to Panama and Canada in the wake of the CONCACAF Nations League Semifinals and third-place play off and Dempsey called out the negative atmosphere around the team in an impassioned rant following the recent 2-1 defeat to Canada.
The 42-year old criticized the team for their lack of pride, and insisted that his generation would have given more fight for the shirt than the current crop of players, joining the number of voices criticizing the team for their lackluster performances over the break.
Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas have also aired their verdict over the perceived lack of fighting spirit and pride around Pochettino’s men.
“No matter how you looked at it, it was going to be a failure. but you’d hope that they would get up for this game, that there would be more pride to try to get things back on track and get this fanbase behind them,” Dempsey said on CBS after the defeat to Canada.
“As we were sitting here, I had some of the [fans] sitting there, shouting to me ‘Get them right, say something’ and I said ‘Hey y’all let them know, let them know what’s going on.’ We need to fight for you all, we gotta do this together.
“Things are not good right now, everybody’s starting to turn on each other a little bit… when I was on the field, I gave you everything I had,” he stated.
The USMNT will return action in June and will be hoping to clinch a win when they will face Turkey, then Switzerland in a pre Gold Cup friendlies.
