Enyimba FC head coach Stanley Eguma has expressed frustration at the officiating in his side’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Bayelsa United on Sunday.
The Peoples Elephant hoped to continue their recently-found momentum with a victory, but they squandered scoring chances and were thwarted by poor officiating as they battled to a draw at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.
Ekene Kennedy Awazie opened the scoring early in the game with a neat finish in the eighth minute.
However, Ifeanyi Ogba leveled things immediately for the visitors in the ninth minute.
Speaking after the match, Eguma was furious with the officials who denied his side two penalty calls which would have given them the opportunity to add to their tally.
He said: “I really feel disappointed because this was a game we worked hard and planned to win. But it’s part of football—sometimes you plan and get a different result.
I think we controlled the first half, created chances, and took one. They had theirs and also converted.
The biggest talking point was the two penalty calls that I believe should have been given.
I’m really disappointed. But I don’t want to say too much to avoid being sanctioned”, he continued.
Enyimba are currently unbeaten in their last five matches and although a win would have kept them closer to a continental spot, the 55-year old has stated that his side remains focused on the next task at hand.
“We have to regroup and prepare well. It’s a different ball game, but we’ll do our best to get a positive result in Ikenne. At this stage, every game is crucial, and we must fight for every point”, Eguma added.
The former NPFL champions travel to league leaders Remo Stars on Thursday as they look to maintain their unbeaten run and close the gap to the top four.
