The Super Eagles may be handed a huge boost in their quest for World Cup qualification as group C rivals South Africa are at risk of losing three points after fielding an ineligible player in their 2-0 victory over Lesotho.
Bafana Bafana deployed Teboho Mokoena in their matchday 5 fixture against Lesotho despite the midfielder already seeing yellow cards on matchday one and matchday four against Benin Republic and Zimbabwe respectively.
FIFA and CAF rules stipulate that players who receive yellow card bookings in two different games will automatically be suspended for the next match following their second booking.
However, Mokoena, whose yellow card accumulation should have triggered a suspension for the Lesotho clash, was in action for South Africa on Friday, featuring from the first whistle and clocking 82 minutes in that game.
This obvious violation of Africa football’s governing body’s disciplinary rule by Bafana Bafana has raised eyebrows all over the continent with numerous reports suggesting that a hefty penalty could be on the cards.
South Africa risks a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible Player in their game against Lesotho.

Should the Confederation of African Football choose to launch an investigation into the matter and eventually find South Africa guilty of breaking the rules, Bafana Bafana could potentially suffer a three-point deduction.
If this happens, Lesotho will be awarded the three points while South Africa lose their place on top of group C. This turn of events would also significantly boost Nigeria’s hopes of securing top spot in the group.
With the Super Eagles currently behind Bafana Bafana by three points, the points deduction will see them become level on seven points, presenting Nigeria with the chance to overtake South Africa depending on the remaining results in group C.
