Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is anticipating a busy summer transfer window at the club in a bid to end their major trophy drought next season.
The Gunners are without a major trophy since winning the FA Cup in the Spaniard’s first year in charge in 2020, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City pipping them to the league title in the past two seasons.
Mikel Arteta’s failure to sign a proven striker in the January transfer window has drawn widespread criticism, with Arsenal now trailing league leaders Liverpool by 12 points.
Injuries to key players Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, and Bukayo Saka have worsened Arsenal’s plight, as they’ve struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, forcing them to deploy former Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift number nine.
“It’s going to be a big one (summer) and we are very excited about it.
When you are going to go again, we want to increase the depth of the squad and the quality and the skills that we need to go to the next step”, the 43-year old said.
“Every summer is big because it is an opportunity and especially because of the number of players we have in the squad right now that is necessary.”
Former Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta joined the club this week as a replacement for Brazilian Edu who left his role last year, with Arteta expressing excitement at the opportunity of working with the Italian.
The Gunners have been linked to the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Alexander Isak, Victor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, and the Spanish boss is excited about the prospects of a summer revamp.
“But it’s a big summer for many things because first of all we have to maintain the good foundations that we have and then obviously how can we improve and evolve the team”, Arteta concluded.
Arsenal host Fulham on Tuesday in the English Premier League, hoping for a victory to reduce the gap to league leaders Liverpool.
