Arsenal have confirmed that Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes will be out of action for the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury.
The 27-year old was replaced by Poland international Jakub Kiwior in the 16th minute of Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Fulham, after picking up a knock.
Gabriel has been one of the most consistent performers for the North London side this season and is expected to undergo surgery following further scans on the injury.
“Further to being substituted during our match against Fulham on Tuesday, we can confirm that Gabriel Magalhaes has sustained a hamstring injury which requires surgery.
Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days, and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the aim to be ready for the start of next season”, Arsenal said in a statement released on social media.
“Everyone at the club will be fully focused on supporting Gabi to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
The Brazil international alongside France defender William Saliba, have formed a formidable partnership that has conceded the least amount of goals in the English Premier League this season.
The former Lille defender has been an ever-present for Mikel Arteta’s side, with his set-piece prowess a key part of his game.
He has contributed to five goals from 42 appearances in all competitions, including three in 28 matches in the league.
Gabriel Magalhaes is now expected to be back in action at the start of next season and will miss the club’s crucial UCL quarterfinal against reigning champions Real Madrid this month.
Mikel Arteta’s side will have to navigate their remaining fixtures this season without the injured Brazilian, with Jurrien Timber, Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori also sidelined.
