Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner signs new two-year contract

Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner has put pen to paper keeping at the club for another two-year with the option of a further 12 months.

Skinner’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season however, a club Spokesperson confirmed that positive talks were ongoing between the club and Manager and Skinner had agreed to a new deal through to 2027 as per The Athletic last month.

“We are building a young, hungry team with the aim of challenging consistently for further trophies,” Skinner said. “There is still more hard work ahead, including this season, but the players and staff have already shown their determination to succeed, and I am looking forward to us taking the next steps in our journey together.“

Skinner succeeded Casey Stoney in 2021 and he has guided United to third in the Women’s Super League this season, level on points with second-place Arsenal, having lost just twice across 18 league games.

United have already surpassed their total points tally from last season when they finished a disappointing fifth — their lowest top-flight finish — 20 points off winners Chelsea and 15 points adrift of Champions League qualification. Skinner did guide his team to a second consecutive FA Cup final and won the women’s team’s first major trophy.

The 42-year old led United to fourth in the WSL during his first season in charge, followed by an impressive second-place finish in 2022-23 as the club qualified for the Women’s Champions League for the first time.

However, Skinner has been the target of criticism from sections of the United fanbase during his tenure. In January last year, a small group of supporters were warned about singing ‘we want Skinner out’ after players and staff were said to have become uncomfortable with the chanting.

He last signed fresh terms in May, agreeing a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

United return to action in the FA Cup semi-finals against Manchester City on April 13.
