Carrick praises Iheanacho’s impact for Middlesbrough in win over Blackburn

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has lauded Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho, after his brace of assists helped the team to a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers on Friday.

The striker had failed to score or assist in first seven games for Boro, but has now contributed to three goals and assists in his last two matches.

The 28-year old who moved to the English championship from Spanish side Sevilla in January on a season long-loan deal in January, is finally appearing to have found his footing after his initial struggles.

Speaking after Friday’s win at Ewood Park which moved them closer to securing a playoff spot at the end of the season, Boro’s gaffer Carrick was pleased with the overall team performance while he also applauded the Nigerian star’s class in another brilliant showing.

He said: “I just think the boys are in a good place and the squad’s in it together, and everyone is playing the part which is important.

At this time, who scores, who sets it up, it’s more of how you impact the game and the roles within it.”

Iheanacho created the opening for Tommy Conway to score the first goal early in the second minute before Samuel Iling-Junior doubled the advantage six minutes later from the edge of the box, after being played through by the Nigerian.

“Everyone is giving everything they got and that was tonight. I don’t think if we don’t have the right attitude or spirit, that can get a touchy game tonight but we’ve seen it off really well”, Carrick added.

Middlesbrough are up to fifth and closer to a playoff spot on the English Championship standings with 60 points and they host automatic promotion-chasing Leeds United at the Riverside stadium on Tuesday.
