Amorim backs Onana despite errors in Manchester United draw against Lyon

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has defender goalkeeper Andre Onana after his pair of errors in Thursday’s 2-2 draw against Olympique Lyonnais.

The Cameroon international was involved in a war of words with former Red Devils midfielder Nemanja Matic before the game, with the former Serbia international labeling him as one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.

Onana did little to hit back at Matic’s comment, being at fault for both of Lyon’s goals with the game ending in a draw ahead of next week’s second leg at Old Trafford.

The 29-year old missed Thiago Almada’s bouncing free kick in the first half giving the French side the lead, before Leny Yoro equalized for the visitors with his first ever goal for the club.

“It’s important [for Andre Onana] to focus on the next game in the Premier League, then think about the second leg”, Amorim said after the match.

“Against Lyon, when one player makes a mistake, the whole team makes a mistake. We will continue to do the same things. Training, seeing the game, trying to choose the best XI to win every match.”

Substitute Joshua Zirkzee scored late in the game to put Manchester United ahead in the tie before another Onana error, spilling Georges Mikautadze’s effort at the feet of Rayan Cherki, allowed Lyon to level with less than 30 seconds of injury-time left.

The former Ajax goalkeeper has now made nine errors leading to a goal in just over two years at the club, with calls for him to be dropped for second-choice Altay Bayindir ahead of the second leg.

Manchester United head to the St James Park on Sunday to face Newcastle United in the English Premier League, before hosting Lyon at the Old Trafford for their second leg next Thursday.
