Antony reveals major reason behind his Manchester United struggles

Brazilian winger Antony dos Santos has attributed his disappointing spell in the Premier League to troubles in his personal life after reigniting his career in the Spanish La Liga.

Antony joined Manchester United from Ajax in 2022 for nearly £90 million and his early performances at Old Trafford showed promise. He scored in each of his first three Premier League appearances, which seemed to justify Erik ten Hag’s decision to bring him in from his former club.

However, Antony managed just two more goals in his next 59 Premier League matches, struggling to replicate his initial impressive form. The Brazilian was loaned out to Real Betis in January after failing to make any meaningful impact this season.

“I think that, apart from my football life, my personal life got in the way a lot, because of the things I went through, the moments I lived there,” Antony told ESPN in a new interview while reflecting on his struggles with the Red Devils. “Like it or not, it’s affected me a lot. So, of course, I know the potential I have.

“It’s not for nothing that I went to a World Cup, it’s not for nothing that I was sold to United for a lot of money, and I know my worth.

“People look at the moment, but they don’t look at the bigger picture, what happens to bring things about. So, as I said, my feeling at United was that I had good moments, bad moments too, but of course I could have done more, I could have done better.”

Antony’s impressive performances at Real Betis have piqued the Spanish club’s interest in signing the 23-year-old on a permanent deal.
