Roman Abramovich has, for the first time, spoken about his coerced sale of Chelsea for a book soon-to-be launched.
Having championed the Blues to their most trophy won in the history of the club, the Russian businessman has finally broken the silence in a series of interviews for a new book due for this summer.
Why was Abramovich sanctioned?
Though his supposed links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, Abramovich still falls under UK government sanctions. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Boris Johnson’s Conservative government first began these sanctions in 2022.
The former London outfit owner had his assets seized and was compelled to allow Chelsea go under UK sanctions. In May 2022, the English top-flight team was officially handed off to Todd Boehly of Clearlake Capital group.
Since then, the 58-year-old has given two unusual interviews on the sale- one in January in Abu Dhabi and another in Istanbul, where he currently spends most of his time.
The two upcoming two-part interview episodes will delve into Abramovich’s personal story of the club transaction and the effects of the sanctions.
Journalist Nick Purewal’s forthcoming book entitled ‘Sanctioned: The Inside Story of the Sale of Chelsea FC’ will offer the Israeli oligarch’s rare insights.
During the ex-politician’s reign, the English side won five Premier League trophies and one UEFA Champions League title.
