Amorim offers blunt verdict on Man United’s draw at Bournemouth

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim admitted that his team need to try and “understand the game” better in order for them to improve their productivity in and around the opposition’s defensive third after watching his side battle to a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils leave it late again

The Red Devils of Manchester looked set for back to back defeats after Antoine Semenyo’s 23rd-minute opener at the Vitality Stadium, but Rasmus Hojlund struck a late blow deep into stoppage time to rescue a point against a Bournemouth side reduced to 10 men following Evanilson’s dismissal.

Although they failed to replicate their recent extra-time display against Olympique Lyon in the Europa League, Manchester United scored once again in stoppage time to rescue a point from the jaws of defeat.

Ruben Amorim’s assessment

Despite dominating possession and registering 25 shots — with six on target — Manchester United lacked that finishing touch until Hojlund grabbed the equalizer. Giving his assessment after the game, Amorim admitted that the Red Devils need to improve on their work in and around the attacking third of the pitch.

“We could do better,” he said as per quotes from the Mirror. “We created chances but we need to do better near the box. It is small things. We have to understand the foot that is in play, crossing, one v ones. We need to understand the game in that way.

“Today we pushed our opponent, especially after the sending off. We had the chances but again we didn’t score.”

Some key takeaways for Bilbao

With Man United currently languishing in 14th place on the Premier League standings, their focus is now certainly on the Europa League where they are set to take on Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final on Thursday, May 1. It appears Amorim was able to learn a thing or two from Sunday’s game in preparation for Thursday.

“The way Bournemouth defend is quite similar to [Athletic Club] we can take things from this game. But again it is a new history and we must do better.”
