Chelsea loanee ‘attracting’ interest from Bundesliga big guns

Chelsea goalkeeper, on loan at Ligue 1 club side FC Strasbourg, Djordje Petrovic is reportedly attracting concrete interest from Bundesliga heavyweights Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the summer transfer window.

Petrovic was a first team regular for Chelsea last season, but despite his impressive displays for the then Mauricio Pochettino led Blues, the Serbian shot-stopper was deemed surplus to requirements upon the arrival of Enzo Maresca at the start of this season and consequently shipped out on loan.

Making waves away from Stamford Bridge

Petrovic has enjoyed an outstanding season in Ligue 1 with Strasbourg, emerging as a strong contender for the French top division’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.

The 25-year-old boasts an impressive 80.1% save percentage — higher than both Maresca’s established first choice goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez and newly signed understudy Filip Jorgensen, who have each endured inconsistent campaigns.

Turning heads with a strong campaign

According to Kicker, several clubs have shown interest in the Serbia international, with Bayer Leverkusen reportedly making him their top target to strengthen their goalkeeping department ahead of next season.

While Petrovic’s exact price tag remains uncertain, Die Werkself are reportedly prepared to invest heavily in a bid to persuade Chelsea to part ways with him. However, there also remains the possibility of Petrovic forcing himself into the plans of Maresca for next season.

Chelsea’s bloated goalkeeping department

As things stand, Chelsea currently have seven senior goalkeepers on their books, with four involved in Maresca’s setup while the other three have been sent out on loan.

Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Marcus Bettinelli and Lucas Bergstrom, in that order, make up the Blues’ current goalkeeping hierarchy while Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mike Penders and the aforementioned Petrovic make up their loaned out contingent.

With the summer fast approaching, it will be interesting to see which turn Petrovic’s exciting career takes. For now, the 25-year-old will be focused on finishing the season strongly.
