Seeking more preparation time for a possible Europa League final clash, Tottenham Hotspur have requested the Premier League to reschedule their next game against Aston Villa. Villa has turned down the offer, but Spurs’ plans are still unknown.
Spurs’ wish for Villa clash
Although they plan to go to Villa Park on Sunday, May 18, the North London outfit are trying to reschedule the match for Thursday, May 15. Ange Postecoglou’s team would face either Manchester United or Athletic Bilbao in the final just three days following the Villans match if they beat Bodo/Glimt in their Europa League semi-final.
“We should like to inform supporters that we are in discussions with the Premier League regarding a change in date to our away Premier League match against Aston Villa, currently scheduled for Sunday, 18 May,” the club said in a statement released on Sunday.
Villa insist on fixture schedule
Still, the Lions have flatly turned down Postecoglou’s squad’s offer. Unai Emery’s team has already had a very busy schedule this season. They have played eight games in only twenty-four days between February and March.
Emery’s men had a midweek Premier League game against Liverpool slotted into their schedule after they bypass a Champions League play-off round and were also required to face Southampton just 72 hours before a vital Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
Approval required from all parties
All parties, including the Birmingham club, broadcasters, and local governments, have to all concur for a fixture postponement to be given the go. Spurs’ chances of rearranging their timetable are now really in question as they pursue European greatness and Villa stay strong in their choice.
