Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has stated that the club’s season would still be deemed disappointing, even with a Europa League triumph at the end of the campaign.
Man United lackluster season
The Red Devils have endured a dismal league campaign so far with just 39 points gathered from 34 games, and are 14th on the log with just four matches remaining.
Manchester United have lost 15 times in the English Premier League this season, the most in a single league campaign in the club’s history, managing just 10 wins in the process.
Ruben Amorim’s side are also on course to record their worst-ever finish and lowest-ever point tally in the club’s Premier League history.
What Amorim said:
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semifinal clash against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, as the Red Devils look to salvage an underwhelming season, Amorim said: “We know nothing is going to save our season but this can be huge.
Winning a trophy, getting in the Champions League to play European games next year could change a lot of things in our club in the summer.”
The former Sporting Lisbon coach has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since joining in November 2024, after Dutch coach Erik Ten Hag was dismissed.
“We need to change a lot of things and we need to be consistent,” he added.
“Europa League will not change anything in our problems. It’s going to give us Champions League next year, more money to spend, but the problems are still there.
We have to change the minds of our fans with consistency, good decisions, good recruitment, good academy. This is what we need to change to take our club back to the top. This is more of a shortcut to go to the European games. Nothing more.”
Can United win the Europa League
Manchester United are still undefeated in Europe this season despite their league flaws, and having staged an incredible comeback performance against Lyon in the last round, will fancy their chances against Thursday’s opponents.
However, the Red Devils have lost three of their last four meetings with Bilbao and must overcome their poor league form to book a place in the final against either Tottenham Hotspur or Bodo/Glimt.
