Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has disclosed in a recent interview that he would take a break after the end of his present contract with the club.
Having won remarkably 18 trophies during his tenure and the 19th in sight should he win the FA cup, the Catalan spoke about his future as soon as his appointment ends in 2027.
“I want people to remember me however they want,” the Spaniard revealed to ESPN Brasil as part of the second series of “Premier League Encounters” on Disney+. “After my contract with City, I’m going to stop. I’m sure. I don’t know if I’m going to retire, but I’m going to take a break. How I want to be remembered, I don’t know.”
Words from Guardiola confirms that his attention is on the pleasure and quality of football his teams deliver rather than on how he would be commemorated.
“All coaches want to win so we can have a memorable job, but I believe that the fans of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City had fun watching my teams play. I don’t think we should ever live thinking about whether we’re going to be remembered.”
Going down memory lane of legacy
Regarding legacy and the soon-to-fade-away character of memory in football, the former Barcelona gaffer provided a philosophical viewpoint.
“When we die, our families cry for two or three days and then that’s it — you’re forgotten. In the careers of coaches, there are good and bad ones, the important thing is that the good ones are remembered for longer.
“I’ll tell you that the most important thing is not what people think of you, after all, our lives as footballers have been very good. There are new challenges as a coach, I don’t know what will happen in the future and in the end that doesn’t matter.”
What does the future have for City?
The 13th English title holders get ready for their upcoming Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday as the ex-Spain international considers his future.
With 61 points, the Etihad stadium outfit now ranks fourth in the league and seeks to secure a Champions League position.
City’s Season and Guardiola’s Influence
The 54-year-old has guided Man City to their third consecutive FA Cup final, scheduled to face Crystal Palace on May 17, 2025, despite difficulties this season including injuries to important players like Nathan Ake, Rodri, Erling Haaland, and John Stones.
By attacking football and an emphasis on the enjoyment of the game, Guardiola’s tenure at the Citizens has been characterized by a commitment, leaving a great impact on players and fans both.
