Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has criticized the club’s decision to sell Scotland international Scott McTominay last summer, deeming it a very surprising decision.
McTominay’s exit from Man United
The 28-year old academy product was deemed surplus to requirement by former Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag last summer and was sold to Italian side Napoli for about £25.7 million.
The Scottish star has been one of the best performers in the Italian club this season as Antonio Conte’s side lead the Serie A, and are on course to win the league at the end of the season with a three-point lead over second-placed Inter Milan.
McTominay has been outstanding this season, contributing to 11 goals and four assists in the league to help the Partenopei’s title charge.
What Solskjaer said:
Speaking in an interview, Besiktas boss Solskjaer said: “Scott and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100%.
How you can sell Scott is beyond me.”
McTominay played under the 52-year old during their time at Old Trafford and was one of the most trusted players during Solskjaer’s tenure in charge, alongside centre-back pair of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.
“For me, Harry [Maguire] has always been a leader and a fighter,” Solskjaer added.
“I was never in doubt when I signed him and he walked in the door he would be captain for us. There is another captain there in Bruno. The two of them are top human beings. I was so happy for them last night.
Those two and Victor [Lindelöf] are probably the only ones I have heard from in the club since I left. You want the best for them.”
