Ilkay Gundogan has at last clarified his unexpected choice to depart Barcelona after only one season. Though he was essential to the squad, Gundogan’s stay in Catalonia came to a sudden conclusion in the summer of 2024.
Looking back on his departure, Gundogan said he had conflicting feelings. As reported by SPORT, he remarked, “I always dreamed of playing for Barça, and I’ve fulfilled it.”
The ex-Barca star disclosed that his choice was guided by a number of elements, not taken lightly.
What is the turning point?
He added: “I had a conversation with Xavi in April 2024 about my future. We had a good relationship, and we played well. But in the end, only Real Madrid were too strong.”

The 34-year-old picked up on a change in the direction of the club even if he was still a trusted presence in Xavi’s midfield. Though his first role was to provide experience and direction to the team, those expectations appeared to shift as the season went on.
What motivated the German’s departure?
Without mincing words, the playmaker’s choice was not only motivated by on-field considerations. The midfielder also mentioned economic factors influencing his departure.
“In the end, I thought it was better to leave. Even at the club, I perceived that despite what I considered a very decent season, they were in favour, mainly for economic reasons.

“And I’m one of those who are not going to stay for the contract to cause problems for anyone.”
His leaving demonstrated his values; he decided to leave instead than be a liability for the club. In his comments, the former Dortmund player showed his honesty and need of harmony.
Did he return to a familiar City?
Not long after leaving the Spanish top-tier side, Gundogan came back to Etihad Stadium to be with familiar people. Still, his connection with the Blaugrana manager Hansi Flick remained close even after he left.
“Hansi and I have always had a strong relationship. I came back from holiday feeling motivated to work with him again. He expected an intense exchange. But it wasn’t like that,” he remarked.
He also noted his ongoing respect for Flick and the team. “The club had other plans. Not much came to fruition. Hansi, for example, contacted me on my birthday. I was very happy. I sincerely congratulate him and the club on their current success.”
The midfielder’s return to Guardiola’s squadis a narrative of loyalty, ideals, and a quest of stability. His brief but powerful stay at Nou Camp will not be forgotten even as he looks forward to a new phase in his career.
