Real Madrid and Manchester City receive huge boost in Florian Wirtz pursuit

Real Madrid and Manchester City have been handed a huge boost in their bid to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s German gem Florian Wirtz after manager Xabi Alonso refuted rumours about the player only wanting a switch to Bayern Munich.

What happened?

Reports have emerged that Wirtz has his sights set solely on a move to Bayern Munich, despite strong interest from top European clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City following another standout season.

Several recent sources in Germany have indicated that the Leverkusen star intends to stay in the Bundesliga and join the Bavarians. However, when asked about these claims, Alonso was quick to dismiss the speculation.

“Florian Wirtz didn’t tell me that he only wants to go to Bayern,” he replied during a press conference. “This is not my information.”

What next?

It appears that Wirtz will be towing the footsteps of his manager in departing the Bay Arena at the end of this season. However, his next destination remains uncertain with strong interest from Bayern, Madrid and City.

The 22-year-old’s recent comments have also hinted at a desire to not only leave Leverkusen, he is seemingly keen on taking his talents abroad, potentially pushing Bayern down the pecking order of prospective suitors.

“I have great respect for the guys here in Leverkusen, who come from South America or Africa, for example, and leave their families and surroundings behind for their careers,” the 22-year-old told Sports Illustrated Germany this week.

“I’m definitely keen to leave my comfort zone at some point and experience something new. I know the football changing rooms well enough and am convinced that I would quickly find a place anywhere.”
