Outgoing Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has set his sights on a Bundesliga record that will see his side become the first team to go on a 34-game unbeaten away run if they avoid defeat against Mainz 05 on Saturday.
A chance to bow out in style
Alonso is set to take charge of his final match as Bayer Leverkusen manager this weekend, with history firmly in his sights.
The Spanish tactician, who led Leverkusen to a sensational campaign last season, clinching both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles while suffering only one defeat in the Europa League final now has the chance to leave on another high.
Though Leverkusen have been unable to match the heights of last season and are poised to finish second behind Bayern Munich this term, they are just one step away from going 34 consecutive away games unbeaten.
It’s a fitting potential send-off for Alonso, who has transformed Leverkusen into one of Europe’s most dynamic sides since taking over. His departure will mark the end of a thrilling era at the BayArena, but he could yet bow out with one final achievement to his name.
“Yes, in terms of football goals, for sure,” Alonso told a press conference on Friday when asked about the potential unbeaten record. “It is very, very meaningful if we reach it.
“To have two whole seasons without an away defeat is special but it is not going to be easy. But we want to try until the last day. We had enough time to say farewell so we want to end with a good feeling for all.”

Xabi Alonso’s next destination
Widely tipped to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid following the Italian’s move to become Brazil’s head coach, Alonso has remained tight-lipped about his future. Despite the growing speculation, he has insisted on focusing solely on finishing the season with Leverkusen before addressing any next steps.
“I think that it is good to finish things properly and there is a right time for everything,” he said.
