Lionel Messi pick Champions League stunner as favourite goal of his career

Inter Miami’s mercurial Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has selected one of the 120 goals he scored in the UEFA Champions League while on the books at boyhood club Barcelona as the favourite goal of his career.

What happened?

Inter Miami revealed last week that Messi would select his favorite goal as part of a club foundation initiative called A Goal in Life. This charitable campaign will feature renowned contemporary artist Refik Anadol, who will transform the Argentine’s chosen goal into a unique piece of art set to be unveiled on June 11, 2025.

The artwork will be showcased at Christie’s, the prestigious New York auction house, with public viewing beginning on June 15, the same day the international online auction opens for those wishing to make a bid. All proceeds from the artwork will go toward charitable causes.

With an incredible tally of 860 goals for club and country throughout his illustrious career, the 2022 World Cup winner boasts a vast array of iconic goals to choose from.

However, his iconic header which ensured Barcelona’s 2–0 win over Manchester United in the 08/09 Champions League final in Rome, capping off a historic treble in one of football’s greatest seasons, stands out as his favourite.

“Because of the moment when it happened, because of what it meant, because it ended up crowning an unforgettable year, for me it’s the most meaningful goal of them all and it’s the header in the Champions League final against Manchester United,” Messi said in a video posted on social media platform Instagram.

“I’ve scored many goals that might have been even more beautiful and valuable. But the header in the Champions League final against Manchester United has always been my favorite.”
